Adrien Seguin

Born : 1926Died : 2005Documented citizenships : France

Adrien Seguin, a French painter born in Pau in 1926 and deceased in Montpellier in 2005, spent his childhood in Senegal and remained in Africa until the age of eighteen. His father, an engineer, was involved, among other things, in the construction of the port of Dakar. After his initial studies at the École supérieure des beaux-arts de Montpellier, from 1946 to 1950, he continued his training in Paris at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, between 1952 and 1956. From 1954 to 1958, he also studied at the Académie André Lhote.

During his years in Paris, Seguin frequented the bohemian circles of Montparnasse and exhibited at various salons, including the Salon d’automne, the Salon des indépendants, the Salon de la Jeune Peinture, the Salon Terre Latine and the Salon de l’Art Libre. He received the second Prix du Dôme in 1956, followed by the first in 1957. Returning to the Midi in the early 1960s, he settled in a studio-house in Montpellier. The distinctions recorded for the later part of his career include a diploma from the city of Montpellier in 1981 and a medal from the Hérault département in 1986.

Fishing and commercial ports feature prominently in his subject matter, with particular attention to the port of Sète. He painted the Mediterranean, the coast and its boats — small boats, cargo ships or cranes — and also worked outdoors. The landscapes and villages of Languedoc are also part of his repertoire. His work additionally includes landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. He combines oil and acrylic and, on some canvases, incorporates materials through collage or assemblage, including fabrics, buttons, wool and nails.
