Henryk Musiałowicz, also known as Henryk Telesfor Musialowicz, was a painter, draughtsman and graphic artist. Born in Gniezno in 1914, he died in Warsaw in 2015. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and graduated there in 1939; his teachers included Feliks Szczęsny Kowarski and Leonard Pękalski. His early works take the experiences of war and the destruction of Warsaw as their subjects. A change in his painting came after his trip to the Netherlands in 1956–1957.
In his compositions, the human silhouette forms the central sign; it is surrounded by ornaments with a texture that is both coarse and sensuous. Some works contain gold or silver filings embedded in the paint layer.
In the 1970s, he turned to nature and created, among other works, the cycles “Animal Landscape” and “Birth of the Earth”. The cycles “Reminiscences”, “Family” and “Epitaph”, by contrast, address existential questions. Towards the end of the period described, his spatial compositions increasingly bring together distinct elements; some are at times intensely polychromatic and suggest impressive totems.
According to the biographical account, he took part in more than one hundred solo exhibitions and 250 group exhibitions in Belgium and abroad. His works were also shown, among other places, in Geneva, Paris, New York, London, Rome and Toronto. In 2002, a retrospective exhibition was devoted to him at the National Museum in Poznań.
