Jules-Alexis Muenier (1863–1942), a French genre painter and etcher, studied at the Paris Beaux-Arts under Jean-Léon Gérôme. His work combines observation of rural life with careful development of figures. The Catechism Lesson, an 1890 oil on canvas held in Besançon, presents a priest and children in a garden. It was exhibited at the Société nationale des Beaux-Arts Salon in 1891.
The graphite Study of Two Children for this composition, dated 1890, illuminates his preparatory process. Drawing mediates between photographs of models and the painting’s arrangement, connecting observation with staging. An anonymous photoglyptie preserved at the Paris Beaux-Arts subsequently documents the work’s reproduction: photography thus accompanies both its preparation and its circulation.
