Richard Zommer is a painter whose repertoire focuses on daily life in Central Asia and the Caucasus, from market scenes to caravans and architectural views. Born in Munich in 1866, he died in 1939. From 1884 to 1893, he trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. From the 1890s and into the early 1900s, he worked in Central Asia and travelled to Samarkand, among other places; according to his biographical entry, these journeys informed a repertoire based on direct observation. He subsequently continued his work in the Caucasus, settled in Tiflis — now Tbilisi — and taught there. His output includes oils on canvas, panel or cardboard, as well as watercolours and gouaches, generally on paper. An auction catalogue describes *Rast in der Wüste*, an oil on canvas mounted on cardboard, signed in Cyrillic at the lower right and measuring 35.5 × 65.2 cm.
