Julius Seyler’s career connects plein-air painting around Lake Ammersee with stays in North America, where the Blackfeet and their history occupy an important place in his painting. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, he studied with Wilhelm von Diez from 1892, with Ludwig von Herterich from 1898, and then with Heinrich von Zügel from 1900. That same year, he began painting outdoors. After stays in Diessen or Fischen am Ammersee from 1899, followed by a stay in Dachau around 1900, he settled on the shore of Lake Ammersee in 1903, where he lived and painted until 1912.
From 1902, his study trips took him to the Netherlands, Belgium, the Atlantic, Norway, Canada and the United States. The source also mentions studies with Anton Mauve and Jacob Maris. He stayed in Paris for the first time in 1909.
In 1910, Seyler married Helga Boeckmann in Saint Paul, Minnesota. From 1914 to 1921, the couple lived in Balsam Lake, Wisconsin. During this period, Seyler ran a farm and established relations with members of the Blackfeet in Montana; a significant part of his painting then focused on this people and their history. On his return to Munich in 1921, he resumed his work, drawing on his earlier work in Germany. The Bayerische Staatsgalerie purchased works by the artist, and in 1924 he was appointed professor h. c. at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.
The bombings of the Second World War caused major losses: his studio on Georgenstrasse in Munich was destroyed in 1943; the following year, 300 of his works were destroyed at the Pinakothek by a bombing raid and water infiltration. After his return to Munich in 1946, his poor eyesight severely limited his output.
