Luigi Pompignoli, a 19th-century Italian painter associated with Neoclassicism and Romanticism, is reported to have been born in Forlì in 1814 and to have died in Florence in 1883; his activity is also associated with Forlì. He began his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he studied from 1838 to 1841. During these years, he also worked as a copyist in the Florentine galleries. This activity is associated with the Annunciazione, a work stated to have been executed after Guercino.
The recorded works include the Madonna col cardellino, an oil on panel after Raphael dated 1865 and measuring 108.5 × 78 cm, as well as the Madonna dei Candelabri, also an oil on panel, dated 1871 and measuring 34.5 × 34.29 cm. Both are listed as being in a private collection. Portraiture also features among the documented works: the Ritratto di Maurizio Bufalini is a 1875 watercolour held at the Pinacoteca of Forlì. Mary A. Leavis, an oil on panel from 1878 measuring 35.56 × 30.48 cm, is listed as being in a private collection and previously at Piazza Santa Croce.
