Иоганн Генрих Рамберг

Johann Heinrich Ramberg (1763–1840), born and deceased in Hanover, was a German painter, draughtsman and illustrator. Following initial lessons with his father, he lived in London from 1781 to 1788 under the patronage of George III. At the Royal Academy, Benjamin West trained him in history painting. He also developed an interest in caricature and in observing artistic society.

After travels around Europe, he became court painter in Hanover in 1793. Literary illustration increasingly occupied the centre of his practice, with drawings supplying books, almanacs and periodicals. His feeling for movement, theatrical situations and expressive lines supported both storytelling and satire. His depictions of London exhibitions also provide visual records of artistic life in the late eighteenth century, seen by an attentive participant.

This profile brings together identity references for Иоганн Генрих Рамберг and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
