Ludwig Dill

Born : 1848Died : 1940

Known as Ludwig Dill, Wilhelm Franz Karl Ludwig Dill studied architecture at the Polytechnic Institute from 1872, before joining the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1874. There he worked under the direction of Karl Theodor von Piloty and Otto Seitz. The region around Venice, and Chioggia in particular, became a favoured place for his plein-air painting. The entry describes an evolution in his landscapes towards an ornamental stylisation close to Art Nouveau.

A founding member of the Munich Secession, he served as its president from 1894 to 1899. His friendship with Adolf Hölzel, who ran an art school in Dachau, is presented as important to his career. With Hölzel and Arthur Langhammer, he founded the group “New Dachau”.

In 1896, he bought a small house in Dachau. From 1899, he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, where he remained until 1919, while spending his summers in Dachau.

This profile brings together identity references for Ludwig Dill and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
