Gotthard Graubner
Born : 1930Died : 2013Documented citizenships : Germany
Gotthard Graubner’s career combines training at several German academies with a long teaching career, while his work is documented here by a group of works on Nepalese paper.
From 1947 to 1948, he studied at the Academy of Arts in Berlin, then from 1948 to 1949 at the academy in Dresden, where he was one of Wilhelm Rudolph’s students. After leaving East Germany in 1954, he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf until 1959, first with Otto Pankok, then with Georg Meistermann. In 1959, after Meistermann left the academy, Graubner became one of Karl Otto Götz’s first students, then left the institution and shortly afterwards came into contact with Otto Piene and Heinz Mack, founders of the Zero group. For a few years, he taught art with Mack at the Lessing Gymnasium in Düsseldorf. Appointed to the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg in 1965, he became professor of painting there in 1969, before teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf from 1976 to 1992. He died in Neuss on 24 May 2013.
Nepala, X, dated 1998, is described in a sales entry as a work in acrylic and watercolour on light-coloured handmade Nepalese paper, measuring 78 × 52 cm. The entry states that it is signed and dated “Graubner 98” in pencil in the lower central area. It relates the work to a series of works with the same title on handmade Nepalese paper, probably created in remembrance of study trips. The provenance given is Galerie Ziegler in Zurich, followed by a private collection in Switzerland.
This profile brings together identity references for Gotthard Graubner and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
35 references are documented at Kornfeld, Piguet, Germann, Lempertz. Each record links to its source; the amounts are not a general valuation of the artist’s work.
