Wilhelm von Kobell (1766–1853), born in Mannheim, came from a family of painters and trained under his father Ferdinand. Settling in Munich during the 1790s, he studied Upper Bavarian landscapes while developing an important printmaking practice. Dutch masters informed his early investigations, which he extended through precise observation of light.
His hunting scenes, encounters between travellers and rural views arrange figures within broad, open spaces. He also undertook commissions for military paintings, notably for Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria. Professor of landscape painting at Munich’s Academy from 1814, he worked in oil, watercolour and etching. His later Alpine views combine clarity of drawing with attention to atmospheric variation and to relationships between human figures, animals and their surroundings.
This profile brings together identity references for Wilhelm von Kobell and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
