Carl Wilhelm Hübner (1814–1879), born in Königsberg and active in Düsseldorf, studied under Carl Ferdinand Sohn and Wilhelm von Schadow. His genre paintings stage social conflicts and relationships of power. The Silesian Weavers contrasts workers’ distress with their employers’ prosperity, giving narrative form to the tensions of his time.
The Deutsches Historisches Museum holds an 1846 version in oil on canvas of a subject Hübner first addressed in 1844 in the context of the weavers’ revolt. In The Unexpected Return, held by the Dr. Axe Foundation, confrontation becomes a family matter: a young sailor faces his father’s anger. Figures positioned close to the picture’s front edge form a theatrical scene whose outcome remains unresolved.
This profile brings together identity references for Karl Hübner and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
