A North Netherlandish painter, draughtsman, printmaker and ornamental designer, Isaac de Moucheron produced a body of work in which architecture occupies a major place. His activity took him to Amsterdam, France, Bologna and Rome, before he continued working in Amsterdam. He studied under his father, the landscape painter Frederik de Moucheron, and is also described as having been influenced by Gaspard Dughet. In Rome, he belonged to the Bentvueghels, a brotherhood of artists from the Netherlands, where he bore the nickname “Arrangement” (Ordenantie). On his return from Italy, he painted Italianate landscapes intended for wall hangings and collaborated with Jacob de Wit. Architecture is described as having a central place in his work, with innovations in this field.
The works cited attest to the diversity of media and subjects: The Large Oval Pond, a drawing from 1690 associated with the Views of the Heemstede House, is joined by a Roman Park, painted in oil in 1725, and a view of the park of Het Loo Palace, drawn in pen and black chalk in 1737. Works held in public collections also include a large Overflow Pool with Statues and Buildings in a Park, an oil on canvas measuring 130 × 160 cm at the Rijksmuseum; an Ancient Landscape at the Musée des Ursulines in Mâcon; and The Monumental Fountain, a watercolour in black ink over a drawing in pen and brown ink, at the Louvre. In 1734, he made a representation of Fortitudo with Jacob de Wit, intended for a decorative scheme and incorporated into a programme of decoration. A brushed drawing monogrammed IM, Arcadian Landscape with Figures near a Tombstone, is listed at the Museum of Fine Arts Leipzig. Nina Wedde’s dissertation, published in 1996, studies his life and work and includes a catalogue raisonné of his drawings, watercolours, paintings and etchings.
