French painter Georges Mathieu (1921–2012) began making his first abstract works in 1947. A sales catalogue attributes an influence on these early explorations to Jackson Pollock, Wols and Willem de Kooning.
His exhibition history includes “Younger European Painters” at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1953, documenta II in Kassel in 1959 and the Venice Biennale in 1986.
The Art Institute of Chicago lists Faintness (Matité), dated 1951, among the works associated with the artist. The stated provenance of Variation en noir passes through the art trade, via an auction in France, and then a private collection in Switzerland.
This profile brings together identity references for Georges Mathieu and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
11 references are documented at Dobiaschofsky, Kornfeld, Artcurial Beurret Bailly Widmer, Piguet, Germann, Lempertz. Each record links to its source; the amounts are not a general valuation of the artist’s work.
