István Boldizsár (1897–1984), born in Orosháza, belonged to the tradition of the Nagybánya artists’ colony. As a Budapest student, he encountered this milieu in the late 1910s before enrolling at Munich’s Academy in 1920. His return to Budapest in 1924 brought a friendship with István Szőnyi, important to his development as an etcher.
Landscapes, portraits and still lifes form his repertoire. Lake Balaton and the Great Hungarian Plain particularly inspired paintings in which colour plays a decisive role. Appointed to teach at Budapest’s College of Fine Arts in 1940, he accompanied students on summer visits to Balaton. In 1977, his donation of thirty-six paintings to Orosháza helped establish a gallery bearing his name in his native town.
This profile brings together identity references for István Boldizsár and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
