Benito Quinquela Martín, born in Buenos Aires in 1890, who died in 1977, grew up in La Boca. He worked in his family’s coal business and then in the port before developing his activity as a painter. Alfredo Lazzari contributed to his training. Quays, ships and harbour labour became enduring subjects, rendered through contrasting patches of colour that give the forms a strong sense of movement.
Elevadores a pleno sol, painted in 1945, unfolds this urban landscape in an oil on canvas two metres high. His commitment to La Boca extended beyond painting. In 1933 he donated land for a school and museum; the school opened in 1936 and the museum in 1938. Painting thus formed part of a cultural and educational project rooted in his neighbourhood.
