Willem Frederiksz van Royen, a Dutch painter who died in 1723, spent most of his career in Brandenburg. He trained with Arnold van Ravesteyn in The Hague between 1661 and 1668 before moving to Berlin in 1669. There he became court painter to Elector Frederick William, succeeding the flower painter Adriaen van der Spelt.
Specialising in still lifes and animal compositions, he also contributed to artistic education in Berlin: in 1698 he became professor and rector of the recently established academy. He moved to Potsdam in 1701. His work includes natural curiosities, such as the anthropomorphic carrot painted in 1699 and preserved by Berlin’s Stadtmuseum under the title Rübe. This attention to unusual specimens extended his repertoire beyond flowers and game.
