Maria Marc, née Bertha Pauline Marie Franck, was a German painter whose artistic training took her to Berlin, Munich and the artists’ colony of Worpswede. Born in Berlin on 12 June 1876, she died in Ried, in the municipality of Kochel am See, on 25 January 1955. She was Franz Marc’s second wife. From 1895, she studied at the Royal School of Art in Berlin to train as a drawing teacher; in 1899, she attended classes at Karl Storch’s women’s studio at the University of the Arts Berlin. In early 1903, she moved to Munich and continued her studies in Max Feldbauer’s class at the women’s academy of the Münchner Künstlerinnenverein. In the summer and autumn of 1905, she stayed in Worpswede to draw under the direction of Otto Modersohn. She met Franz Marc in Munich in February 1905; a biography of him places their marriage in the summer of 1911, during a trip to England.
A documented work, Stillleben mit Osterlamm, is dated to around 1909: this oil on canvas measures 33 × 50 cm. The published provenance lists the artist’s estate, followed by a private collection in the Rhineland. The painting is listed in the exhibition Maria Marc 1876-1955, presented in 1996 at the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich. It is also included in Maria Marc im Kreis des «Blauen Reiter», presented in 2004 at the Schloßmuseum in Murnau.
This profile brings together identity references for Maria Marc and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
