Born in Rheydt in 1803 and died in Düsseldorf in 1889, Johann Wilhelm Preyer is described as a painter devoted exclusively to still life. The biographical note describes a meticulous and detailed treatment of fruit and flowers.
Trained in Düsseldorf in 1822, he lived with his family in Eschweiler from 1810 until the mid-1830s; the family had a studio there at 33 Gartenstraße. His travels took him to the Netherlands in 1835, to Munich in 1837, and then to Venice, Milan and Switzerland in 1840, followed by a stay in Tyrol in 1843.
A sheet entitled “Studie mit einer Blumenvase und Weinlaub”, in pencil on paper and measuring 31 × 24 cm, bears the date “13.10.69”. The auction house considers it likely to be a page from a sketchbook; on the verso is a study of a wine goblet. It compares the dating and handwriting on the sheet with those on other drawings by Preyer, referring to the book by Siegfried Weiß and Hans Paffrath, Johann Wilhelm und Emilie Preyer (2009), p. 108.
His paintings are associated with the Düsseldorf School of Painting. The note states that most are in the United States and that several are held at the Nationalgalerie and in the Ravené Collection in Berlin.
This profile brings together identity references for Johann Wilhelm Preyer and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
