The Belgian artist René Magritte (1898–1967), associated with Surrealism, transforms familiar objects into unusual and ambiguous scenes. Unexpected juxtapositions, shifts in scale and plays on words unsettle familiar points of reference and disrupt the reading of the image. In La durée poignardée, dated 1938 and also known by its English title Time Transfixed, he explains that he brought the image of a locomotive together with the familiar image of a dining-room fireplace to make mystery emerge. The example sheds light on an approach that gives rise to the strange within everyday life itself.
The exhibition Magritte: The Mystery of the Ordinary 1926–1938, organised by the Art Institute of Chicago in 2014, was devoted to an experimental period early in his career, during which he developed his mature style. Works dated later include The Banquet, from 1958, and The Tune and Also the Words, from 1964. These reference points extend the documented chronology of his work, without being sufficient on their own to describe its transformations.
This profile brings together identity references for René Magritte and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
