The Dutch painter and art dealer Thomas Heeremans (1641–1694) is associated with a landscape practice attentive to the diversity of settings and the activities that animate them. Born and died in Haarlem, he became a member of the city’s Guild of Saint Luke in 1664. He was baptised there in the Reformed Church on 29 May 1641. His work encompasses winter landscapes, urban and harbour views, beaches, rivers and villages; he returned in particular to Scheveningen, as well as to the village, beach and ruins of Egmond. His paintings are frequently conceived as pendants, a choice that places his views in ensembles that respond to one another. He may have been a pupil of Caesar van Everdingen.
The notice relates his style to that of Klaes Molenaer, particularly in winter landscapes and river scenes, while distinguishing his compositions by a lighter palette and livelier movement than in Molenaer’s scenes, described as rather melancholic. His landscapes often include numerous villagers engaged in skating, sledging, fishing or conversation; these activities give the views an everyday liveliness. He sometimes collaborates with painters specialising in figures, who add staffage to his landscapes: Abraham Storck is notably associated with the figures in Winter landscape with the Montelbaanstoren, Amsterdam. Dated 1690 and executed in oil on canvas, this work measures 76 × 108.5 cm; it was offered at Christie’s in New York on 14 April 2016.
