Carl Philipp Fohr (1795–1818), born in Heidelberg, gained the support of Princess Wilhelmine Luise of Hesse after his initial drawing instruction. His watercolours combine landscapes with legends of the Black Forest. He attended the Munich Academy in 1815–1816 and travelled through Tyrol, northern Italy and Salzburg, recording his journeys in drawings and watercolour studies.
His friend Ludwig Sigismund Ruhl introduced him to Romantic poetry and oil painting. Interested in the art of Dürer’s era, Fohr walked to Rome in 1816 and worked in Joseph Anton Koch’s studio. His designs for a group portrait of German artists at the Café Greco document this Roman circle. His career ended abruptly when he drowned in the Tiber in 1818, leaving a body of work in which drawing predominates.
This profile brings together identity references for Karl Philipp Fohr and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
