Pieter van der Werff
Born : 1665Died : 1722
Pieter van der Werff, born in Kralingen in 1665 and deceased in Rotterdam in 1722, pursued a career closely connected with his elder brother Adriaen. He painted independently while also contributing to the family workshop. The Rijksmuseum explains that A Nymph Dancing to a Shepherd's Flute, although signed by Adriaen, was largely executed by Pieter.
His Self-Portrait of 1694, an oil on canvas at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, provides an example of his own production. A Girl Drawing and a Boy near a Statue of Venus, dated 1715, represents artistic learning through the study of classical sculpture. A boy presents a head of Venus, while a relief of playing putti decorates the base. This panel painting brings a familiar activity into contact with models from antiquity.
