Duncan Grant

Born : 1885Died : 1978Documented citizenships : United Kingdom

Duncan Grant (1885–1978) pursued his career through collective initiatives: he was one of the founders of the Camden Town Group in 1911, then founded the Omega Workshops with Roger Fry in 1913. He later became co-director with Vanessa Bell. In 1916, as a conscientious objector, he settled as a farmer in Suffolk with David Garnett. Grant, Vanessa Bell and Garnett moved into Charleston Farmhouse, near Firle, in Sussex. Grant and Bell lived together for more than forty years.

Among Grant’s works listed by the Art Institute of Chicago are Female Nude Near Fireplace, Arms and Legs Crossed (1923) and Portrait of David Garnett (1929). The institution also lists West Wind, dated 1931. A sketch for the ball scene in Cinderella, made around 1944, is an oil on paper mounted on wood, measuring 50 × 183 cm; it is associated with a mural project for Devonshire Hill School designed by Grant and Vanessa Bell.

This profile brings together identity references for Duncan Grant and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
