August Riedel situates his landscape within the conventions of German landscape painters based in Rome, while distinguishing himself through a light palette. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1820, he left for Italy in 1828 and spent much of the following year in Florence. Difficulties with Peter von Cornelius led him to Dresden, where he became familiar with the Old Masters.
The biographical account links him to the Nazarene movement in his youth, and later, in maturity, to the Academy of San Luca; he taught there until the end of his life. In Rome, he became friends with the painters Léopold Robert and J. V. Schnetz. His works are noted at the Neue Pinakothek in Munich and the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
This profile brings together identity references for August Riedel and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
