Louise Nevelson (1899–1988) was an American artist born in present-day Ukraine. Arriving in the United States with her family in 1905, she later settled in New York and studied with Hans Hofmann among others. Her training included painting as well as dance and theatre. Drawing and printmaking remained important alongside a career celebrated for sculptural assemblages.
She combined found wood, furniture components and architectural fragments, transforming them into abstract ensembles through a single colour. Black dominates many works; white is central to Dawn’s Wedding Feast, presented at the Museum of Modern Art in 1959. Her graphic experiments, including work at Atelier 17, similarly explore rhythm and interlocking forms. Relief, printed image and shared space participate in the same process of visual construction.
This profile brings together identity references for Louise Nevelson and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
