François Gall

Born : 1912Died : 1987Documented citizenships : France · Hungary

His training began with Aurel Popp and continued in Rome, at the Accademia di San Luca in Umberto Coromaldi’s studio, before he entered the Collegium Hungaricum. His hometown organised a first exhibition of his works in 1932; at a second presentation, at Rome’s Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, he exhibited social subjects. Settling in Paris in 1936, he enrolled at the École des beaux-arts and attended the studios of Charles Guérin and André Devambez. The following year, he presented subjects inspired by Parisian life at the Galerie Szalmasy in Budapest.

In 1947, Bread for the People, shown at the Salon des artistes français, received the gold medal. In 1949, the year he became a French citizen, a solo exhibition was devoted to him at the Galerie Durand-Ruel; the state acquired his Port of Honfleur there. In London, the Marlborough Fine Art Gallery brought together around thirty of his works, then presented his Landscapes of France in 1951. In 1954, the Gall family acquired a house with a studio at 8, villa Brune, in Paris’s 14th arrondissement, from the widow of the painter Jules-Émile Zingg.

Gall’s subjects range from social scenes, crucifixions and war, treated in a dark palette, to landscapes and scenes of everyday life. He painted, in particular, the bridges of Paris, markets, ports and beaches, as well as maternity scenes, portraits and family scenes. Among the personalities he portrayed were Édith Piaf, Marielle Goitschel, France Gall and Roland Dorgelès. Les Otages, an oil painting on canvas dated 1945, is held at the Musée de la Résistance in Saint-Honoré-les-Bains. Taking part every year in the Salon des peintres témoins de leur temps in Paris, he received the Francis Smith Prize in 1963 at the Musée Galliéra; this distinction enabled him to make a study trip to Portugal. Elected vice-president of the Société des artistes indépendants in 1977, he became president of the Syndicat national des artistes peintres et sculpteurs professionnels in 1987.
