Gaspare Diziani trained in Belluno and then in Venice with Gregorio Lazzarini and Sebastiano Ricci. His career took him to Dresden in 1717, before his return to Venice in 1720. Drawing occupies an important place in his work. An altarpiece design in the Morgan Library depicts Saint John the Baptist and Saint Dominic adoring the Virgin and Child.
The sheet combines pen, grey and brown wash and an initial drawing in red chalk. Washington’s Sacrifice of Isaac, dated around 1755, adds white gouache highlights to ink and washes. In The Fall of Phaeton, placed between 1745 and 1750, Diziani likewise uses red chalk beneath brown ink. These works on paper carry related graphic techniques between religious and mythological subjects.
