The German painter and printmaker Georg Gerhard Schrimpf developed a body of work that the source distinguishes from New Objectivity by its lack of social criticism; it comprises pared-back still lifes, portraits of women in front of a window or mirror, and tranquil, idealised landscapes. These motifs, characterised by their stillness and idealisation, offer several points of entry into his painting.
From 1905 to 1914, he travelled in Belgium, France, Switzerland and northern Italy, where he supported himself with odd jobs. In 1913, he settled in an anarchist colony in Switzerland and became friends with Oskar Maria Graf. Based in Berlin from 1915 to 1918, he worked there as an independent artist; in 1916, Herwarth Walden presented some of his works at Galerie Sturm, where Schrimpf met the painter Maria Uhden, whom he married in 1917.
In 1925, he took part in the Neue Sachlichkeit exhibition at the Kunsthalle Mannheim; works cited around this period include Martha (1925) and Auf dem Balkon (1927). From 1927, he taught at the Meisterschule für Dekorationskunst in Munich, then became a professor at an art school in Berlin in 1933. Dismissed from his Berlin post in 1937, he was also classified by the Nazi regime in the 1930s as an artist associated with “degenerate art”. He died in Berlin in 1938.
Landscapes are another recurring motif in the sources: Porto Ronco (1917), Chiemsee (1931), Osterseen (c. 1933) and Staffelsee (1934) provide a few reference points, while portraits and interior scenes are represented notably by Martha, Auf dem Balkon and Am Morgen (1931). In 1924, Eine Reise um die Welt in 16 Bildern was published by Curt Steinitz in Munich. Works by Schrimpf are listed in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin and the Kunstmuseum Basel.
This profile brings together identity references for Georg Schrimpf and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
