Gen Paul

Born : 1895Died : 1975Documented citizenships : France

Born and died in Paris, Eugène Paul, known as Gen Paul, developed a body of work in which scenes of Montmartre, portraiture and depictions of music coexist. Trained in decorative furniture making and working as an upholsterer, he is described as self-taught; Eugène Delâtre introduced him to engraving. His first oil painting, a view of the Moulin de la Galette from his window, dates from 1916. Between 1919 and 1924, his first canvases were painted under the pseudonym Paul Trelade.

His subjects include the streets and scenes of his Montmartre neighbourhood, as well as portraits of his friend, the composer Darius Milhaud. His work also includes paintings and drawings made in the United States, jazz scenes and depictions of classical musicians. In 1928, his works were shown alongside those of Picasso and Soutine. In 1937, he was commissioned to paint a large mural for the French Wines Pavilion at the Paris International Exhibition. Works by Gen Paul are held in museums in France and other European countries, including in Bern and Granville; the Musée d’Art moderne de la ville de Paris holds two large paintings from the late 1930s.

This profile brings together identity references for Gen Paul and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
