Rubem Valentim, born in Salvador in 1922, who died in São Paulo in 1991, developed paintings, sculptures and prints informed by Afro-Brazilian traditions. From the 1950s, he recomposed signs from Candomblé within a geometric language. His notebooks reveal a methodical process: forms associated with the orixás meet letters and become elements of a personal alphabet.
Works from his Roman period particularly explore symmetry, primary colours and the suggestion of volume within the painted surface. Xangô’s double-edged axe belongs to this repertoire of balanced forms. The Emblemas logotipos poéticos da cultura afro-brasileira and Relevos emblemas extend this construction through series. Valentim thus brings abstract organisation into dialogue with cultural memory, without reducing his signs to a merely decorative function within the composition.
This profile brings together identity references for Rubem Valentim and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
