Delphin Enjolras

Born : 1857Died : 1945Documented citizenships : France

Delphin Enjolras is particularly known for his intimate scenes of women, often lit by a lamp or a fire, in which pastel, oil and watercolour are used to create a range of interior lighting, sometimes in orangey tones. His work also includes landscapes, portraits and nudes; according to one source, landscapes predominated in his early years before the female figure took on greater prominence.

Trained under Gaston Gérard, he studied watercolour at the École de dessin de la Ville de Paris, then worked with Jean-Léon Gérôme and Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret; Gustave Courtois is also listed among his teachers in a biographical notice. On leaving the School in 1889, he chose an artistic career rather than a position as a drawing teacher at the lycée in Grenoble. He exhibited at the Salon des artistes français that same year and became a member of the Société des artistes français in 1901.

In 1892, at the invitation of the deputy Ernest Blachère, he settled in Saint-Gilles-du-Gard. This stay inspired several paintings drawn from life in the Camargue, including Le Retour des taureaux, Moutons de Camargue, Le Marché de Saint-Gilles and La Sortie de messe. In 1929, he presented two paintings at the Salon d’hiver, Repos and Lecture.

La Mort de Dupleix, acquired by the State, earned him the Palmes académiques. Other titles associated with his work include Le Livre favori, La Lettre and La brodeuse. Works by Enjolras are recorded in the collections of the Musée du Puy and the Musée d’Avignon.

His work is the subject of a contribution by Marie-Jo Volle, published in 2022 in the collective volume Peindre l’Ardèche, peindre en Ardèche – de la préhistoire au XXe siècle.
