Bartolomeo Manfredi, born around 1582 and deceased in Rome in 1622, helped spread Caravaggesque painting. Trained in northern Italy, he encountered Caravaggio's work in Rome without being his pupil in the strict sense. He particularly favoured gatherings of musicians, drinkers and card players, arranged as half-length figures across large horizontal canvases. Strong contrasts of light give these contemporary scenes a sense of dramatic tension.
A Drinking and Musical Party at the Getty, dated around 1615–1620, brings young men together around a table made from an ancient marble fragment. A knife and an exposed sword introduce a threat into the festivities. The Concert and The Card Players at the Uffizi, commissioned by Cosimo II around 1616, demonstrate a princely patron's interest in this repertoire of subjects.
