Born in The Hague and established in Lyon, Corneille de Lyon became a French citizen in 1547 and served as royal painter under Henry II and Charles IX. He died in 1575. His small portraits sometimes require caution in distinguishing his own hand from that of his workshop. In the Metropolitan Museum’s Portrait of a Man with Gloves, about 1535, fur, a ring and linen cuffs enliven a likeness still shaped by his Netherlandish origins.
The National Gallery’s Man in a Black Biretta appears close up against green. His clothes suggest a priest or lawyer, without establishing his identity. Another London portrait, Man holding a Glove, dates to about 1550. Technical examination revealed no underdrawing, allowing the possibility that it was painted directly from the sitter.
This profile brings together identity references for Corneille de Lyon and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
