Jean-Louis Forain

Jean-Louis Forain, a French artist born in 1852 and deceased in 1931, developed a practice in which illustration went hand in hand with printmaking. In 1876, he began supplying drawings and captions to Figaro and Courrier français; he also worked as an etcher and lithographer. He studied in Paris with Chevreuse and Carpeaux, then briefly with Gérôme. A friend of Manet and Degas, he was invited by the latter to take part in certain Impressionist exhibitions.
After 1900, Forain turned to religious and judicial subjects. The titles listed in the Art Institute of Chicago catalogue attest to the diversity of the themes he addressed: In the Wings, dated 1899, Woman Putting on Her Stocking and Return of the Prodigal Son, Third Plate, both dated 1909. The same catalogue lists Tight-Rope Walker, circa 1885, as well as The Clothing of the Prisoner of war, circa 1915. These works span several decades of his activity, without requiring a stylistic development to be inferred from their titles and dates alone.
