Painter, lithographer and watercolourist Eugène Louis Gabriel Isabey was born in Paris on 22 July 1803. He was the son of the painter Jean-Baptiste Isabey. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1824. His work encompasses historical and genre scenes, landscapes, seascapes and shipwrecks.
The same year, he stayed in Honfleur with the painter Xavier Leprince, then settled in Saint-Siméon in 1826. In his maritime subjects, he focused on the circumstances of sailors at low tide rather than the spectacle of waves crashing against the cliffs. His style combines rapid, fluid execution, freely applied brushwork and precise details.
Among his works is The Arrival of the Duke of Alba in Rotterdam, dated 1844 and held at the Musée d’Orsay. A View of the Norman Coast, dated 1852, is held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. After the Storm, dated 1869, belongs to the collections of the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. Towards the end of his life, Isabey abandoned oil painting in favour of watercolour and gouache, which he practised on site. Appointed a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1832, he was promoted to Officier of the order in 1852.
