Otto Modersohn
Born : 1865Died : 1943
The German painter Otto Modersohn, born in 1865 and deceased in 1943, made landscape the enduring focus of his work. His early works belong to the tradition of the Barbizon School; later, landscapes remained his main source of inspiration. He studied at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts from 1884 to 1888, then continued his training in Karlsruhe until 1890.
In Worpswede, where he met Fritz Mackensen and Hans am Ende in July 1889, the three artists founded an artists’ colony. This move marked a clear transformation in his style: he then used colours that the source describes as influenced by Expressionism, while retaining landscape as his essential subject. After Paula Modersohn-Becker’s death, he moved to Fischerhude and married Louise Breling in 1909. A museum intended to present his works was established in Ottersberg in 1974.
This profile brings together identity references for Otto Modersohn and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
33 references are documented at Artcurial Beurret Bailly Widmer, Koller, Kornfeld, Lempertz. Each record links to its source; the amounts are not a general valuation of the artist’s work.
