Self-taught, Albert Gleizes began painting around 1901 in the Impressionist tradition. At the 1911 Salon des Indépendants, he took part in the collective presentation of the Cubists in Room 41, which included La Femme aux phlox. That same year, at the Salon d’automne, he exhibited Portrait de Jacques Nayral and La Chasse. In 1912, together with Jean Metzinger, he published Du « Cubisme », a theoretical work devoted to the movement.
After marrying Juliette Roche in September 1915, he left France and settled in New York. In the autumn of 1916, Galerie Dalmau in Barcelona hosted his first solo exhibition. After returning to France in 1919, he turned to teaching and developed a body of « object-paintings ».
Theoretical writing occupied a large part of his activity in the 1920s and 1930s; his works include La Peinture et ses lois (1923), Vers une conscience plastique (1932) and Homocentrisme (1937). In 1927, he and Juliette Roche founded the Moly-Sabata community in Isère, near their home in Serrières; in 1930, they entrusted its management to Anne Dangar. In 1931, he joined the Abstraction-Création movement. From 1939 onward, he lived in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and continued his work there among disciples.
