Dirk van Delen worked in Arnemuiden, near Middelburg, where he also held municipal offices, including that of burgomaster. His paintings concentrate on architecture: churches, halls and palace courtyards. After 1630, palaces became increasingly prominent in his repertoire, accompanied by lighter colours, pink and white marble, and façades embellished with sculpture.
A Gallery in the Rijksmuseum, painted around 1630–1632, belongs to a decorative ensemble of seven parts. Its architecture and statues surround figures identified in the catalogue, including Prince Maurice. Figures at a Sumptuous Feast in an Architectural Interior of 1651, in the Crocker Art Museum, likewise combines people and monumental space. Architecture therefore provides more than a background: it forms the principal framework of the representation.
This profile brings together identity references for Dirck van Delen and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
