The Italian painter and printmaker Giovanni Fattori, born in Livorno and deceased in Florence, is one of the representatives of the Macchiaioli movement. In Florence, he frequents the Caffè Michelangiolo, a meeting place for artists and a venue for debates about art. At the beginning of his career, he creates historical and romantic subjects within the academic framework of his time; Mary Stuart at the Field of Crookstone is dated to around 1860. In 1859, he takes up episodes of the Risorgimento as part of the Concours Ricasoli, which he wins with The Italian Camp after the Battle of Magenta, held at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Florence according to the source.
His stays in Castiglioncello, until 1875, are associated with the development of a painting attentive to landscapes observed from life and to outdoor portraiture, in which colour “patches” take on increasing importance. The source also describes a gradual move away from Romantic chiaroscuro in favour of precise contrasts of light and colour. The landscapes and inhabitants of the Maremma, as well as military life, recur in his work: Herds of the Maremma or The Butteri (1893) refers to the former, while The Man Who Lost His Stirrup (1882) relates to the latter. La Rotonda di Palmieri (1866), held at the Pitti Palace, is among the works mentioned. Alongside painting, Fattori practises watercolour and etching.
From 1869, he teaches painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence; in 1902, he directs the institution’s Scuola Libera di Nudo. He exhibits regularly at the Venice Biennale from its first edition, in 1895. According to the source, the Gallery of Modern Art at the Pitti Palace holds fifty works by the artist.
