Arthur Grimm’s work spans several genres: he is particularly known for his still lifes, flower paintings and landscapes, and also produces watercolours, drawings, portraits and self-portraits. Jahrmarkt, dated 1917, bears witness to the variety of his media on paper: pencil, pastel, Indian ink, gouache and watercolour are combined in it.
His training began in Karlsruhe, where he attended the school of applied arts from October 1902 and studied under Hermann Burte. From 1907 to 1911, he studied at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts: Ludwig Schmidt-Reutte was his first teacher, before he was admitted to Wilhelm Trübner’s master class in the autumn of 1907. From around 1907, he joined the group that gathered in Hollerbach around Franz Wallischeck for summer stays. In 1910, he received the Preis der Rheinlande for the landscape Säckingen am Oberrhein. The previous year, his name appeared among the artists listed for the 1909 Deutsche Kunst-Ausstellung at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden.
Stays in Paris marked his early years: he spent three months in Paris in the spring of 1908, then lived there with his wife for seven months, until June 1914, after their marriage in 1913. In 1922, a journey along the Rhine, from Mainz to Düsseldorf, provided the subject for seven etchings. From 1923, his family rented the Quettighof in Baden-Baden as a residence. In the spring of 1925, he travelled with his wife in northern and central Italy; his Italian works are associated with this stay.
