Matthijs Naiveu

Matthys Naiveu is known for his genre scenes, but his oeuvre also includes portraits, religious subjects and still lifes. This diversity is documented alongside an activity particularly associated with genre painting. He joined the Leiden Guild of Saint Luke in 1671. In 1677, he held the position of Hoofdman in Leiden, then settled in Amsterdam the same year.

The earliest known work is dated 1668 and the latest 1721, placing the documented dates of his production across more than half a century. Works listed in public collections include *Der heilige Hieronymus* (1679), at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam; *Besuch im Kindergarten* (1700), at Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden; and *Das neugeborene Kind* (1675), at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

This profile brings together identity references for Matthijs Naiveu and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
