Wilhelm Leibl
Wilhelm Leibl was a German painter and printmaker associated with realism. He trained at the Munich Academy, encountered Courbet’s painting and travelled to Paris in 1869. His move to the Bavarian countryside from 1873 encouraged close observation of local people and their everyday activities. This attention to his immediate surroundings shaped his work.
Three Women in Church, painted between 1878 and 1882 and held by the Hamburger Kunsthalle, represents three stages of life and different forms of devotion. Proximity to the models and precise detail organise the scene. On a different scale, Interior, dated about 1895–1900 in the Neue Pinakothek collection, is painted in oil on a small mahogany panel. Acquired in 1901, it demonstrates the place of domestic spaces in his later production.
