The German painter and printmaker Max Slevogt works in several forms of expression, from painting to printmaking and book illustration, as well as designing costumes and sets for the theatre. From 1885 to 1889, he studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he is taught by, among others, Wilhelm von Diez, Karl Raupp and Johann Caspar Herterich. He joins the Berlin Secession in 1901.
Among his early works cited is Scheherezade, shown in the German pavilion at the 1900 World’s Fair. His portrait of the Portuguese baritone Francisco d’Andrade, Das Champagnerlied (1901–1902), is followed by two further versions of the subject: Der Schwarze d’Andrade (1904), then Der Rote d’Andrade (1912). Slevogt travels to Egypt in 1902 and again in 1914; this second stay results in watercolours and canvases, among other works.
Illustration is another important aspect of his work: he produces Ali Baba between 1900 and 1902, twelve lithographs for L’Iliade in 1907, and illustrations for Goethe’s second Faust between 1925 and 1927. He also makes 39 etchings for an edition of The Magic Flute overseen by Paul Cassirer and published in 1920, as well as a series of engravings for Goethe’s Faust. From 1905 onwards, he also works for the stage, designing costumes and sets for Max Reinhardt. Between 1931 and 1932, he creates Golgotha, a religious fresco intended for the Church of Peace in Ludwigshafen am Rhein; the work is now destroyed. A pen drawing entitled Figuren aus « 1001 Nacht », attributed to Slevogt, is described as signed at the lower left and measures 24 × 16 cm.
