The Italian painter and sculptor Mimmo Paladino—whose name is Domenico Paladino—develops a practice that moves from painting to sculpture, installations and film. Born in Paduli in 1948, he spends his childhood in Naples, where his interest in art is shaped in part by the presence of an uncle who is a painter. From 1964 to 1969, he studies at the art high school in his hometown.
In 1977, Silenziozo, mi ritiro a dipingere marks the first appearance of the artist figure in his work; it appears alongside animal motifs and domestic objects. His practice brings together a range of materials and techniques, which he combines in compositions where the mixing can be taken very far. He juxtaposes disparate images and styles, often charged with mythical or symbolic resonances, and shows a predilection for the archaic. He works notably with bronze and ceramics; from 1985, he also creates large bronze sculptures and installations.
His participation in the Venice Biennale begins in 1980, in the Aperto 80 section. In 1982, he takes part in the Sydney Biennale, Zeitgeist in Berlin and documenta 7 in Kassel. In 1994, he exhibits at the National Gallery of Fine Arts in Beijing. The following year, as part of an exhibition organised in Naples, he installs a mountain of salt in Piazza del Plebiscito. In 1999, he presents the Dormienti cycle beneath the Roundhouse, in an exhibition organised by the South London Gallery. The Centro per l’arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci in Prato devotes a retrospective to him in 2002–2003.
In 2006, he makes Quijote, a film conceived around the work of Cervantes. In January 2008, a 90-metre-long fabric decorated with his paintings wraps around the Torre Ghirlandina in Modena during restoration work. He returns to the Venice Biennale in 2015 as part of the Italian Pavilion, where a space is dedicated to him.
