Eduard Bendemann followed his teacher Wilhelm Schadow to Düsseldorf in 1827 and established himself there as an independent painter in 1831. Biblical narratives occupy an important place in his history painting. The Mourning Jews in Exile, inspired by Psalm 137 and the Babylonian captivity, existed in several painted versions and also circulated widely through prints. The Frankfurt version dates from after 1832.
A head study of 1832 in the Stiftung Sammlung Volmer reveals the painting’s expressive preparation: the curved lines of the cloth accompany the face’s sadness. Bendemann combined this attention to figures with monumental commissions. He taught at the Dresden Academy and created frescoes for the royal palace, then directed the Düsseldorf Academy from 1859 to 1867.
This profile brings together identity references for Eduard Bendemann and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
