Conrad Felixmüller is a painter whose works often address the social realities of the Weimar Republic. Born in Dresden on 21 May 1897, he died in Berlin-Zehlendorf on 24 March 1977. After studying music in 1911, he studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts from autumn 1912.
His career was also marked by political commitment: he was a member of the Communist Party of Germany from 1919 to 1924. In Dresden, he founded the Group 1919 of the Dresden Secession with Otto Dix. In 1936, the Nazi regime described him as a painter of “degenerate art”; he was expelled from Berlin and 150 of his works were destroyed. From 1949 to 1962, he taught at the University of Halle.
Among the dated works is Soldier in an Asylum, from 1918. Death of the Poet Walter Rheiner, made in 1925, is an oil on canvas measuring 180 × 115 cm, listed as belonging to the Robert Gore Rifkind Foundation in Beverly Hills. Some of his works are listed as being on display at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg.
This profile brings together identity references for Conrad Felixmüller and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
