Rochus van Veen

Active in the Netherlands during the second half of the seventeenth century, Rochus van Veen belonged to a family of artists specialising in natural-history drawing. Based in Beverwijk, he mainly depicted plants and animals found in his surroundings. Watercolour and gouache allowed him to describe feathers, wings and botanical details precisely while keeping each specimen clearly legible.

His Drake Pintail of 1682, held by the Rijksmuseum, carefully renders the bird's plumage and characteristic long tail. In Three Dragonflies, dated 1681 and held by the Getty Museum, he accompanies the insects with a note describing a mass migration witnessed during a drought. These sheets thus combine artistic representation with testimony about the living world, extending beyond the purely decorative pleasures of the image.

This profile brings together identity references for Rochus van Veen and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
