Emil Filla

Born : 1882Died : 1953

The Czechoslovak painter and sculptor Emil Filla, born in Chropyně, Moravia, in 1882, took part in the Cubist explorations of the first half of the 20th century. From 1911, he painted mainly in a Cubist idiom; sources report that his encounter with the works of Picasso and Braque in 1909 was important to his artistic development. During stays in Paris between 1909 and 1914, he met Picasso and Braque in person; one source also mentions Juan Gris.

In 1907–1908, Filla was a member of the Osma group, also called “The Eight”. In 1911, he edited several issues of the journal Volné směry, which promoted Cubism and published reproductions of works by Picasso. Around 1913, he created some of the first Cubist sculptures with the sculptor Otto Gutfreund. After settling in Paris before the First World War, he left for the Netherlands in 1915 and lived in Amsterdam during the war. In 1925, he designed paintings on glass for the Czechoslovak pavilion at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris.

Described as an antifascist, he was arrested by the Gestapo in 1939, then interned at Dachau and Buchenwald. A painting listed under the title “Zena se psem” (“Woman with a Dog”) is described as oil on canvas, signed and dated “(19)35”, measuring 116.5 × 89 cm; in 1987, it was included in the exhibition Svet Emila Filly in Prague, as no. 127, and in the corresponding catalogue, page 39. The sale notice also reports his interest in cynology, his breeding of small boxers and his artistic exploration of the relationships between humans and animals.
