Milivoj Uzelac (1897–1977), a Croatian painter born in Mostar, trained in Zagreb and subsequently worked in Prague with Jan Preisler. Returning to Zagreb after the First World War, he contributed to the renewal of Croatian painting through Expressionism and Cubist experiments. His friendship with Vilko Gecan accompanied this development. He settled in France in 1923 while continuing to exhibit in his homeland.
In Harvest of 1922, Uzelac reworks the subject of Adam and Eve: the painter offers fruit to his wife Nataša. Firmly modelled volumes accompany an increasing attention to colour. Plane Trees of 1933, held by Zagreb’s National Museum of Modern Art, demonstrates the importance of chromatic contrasts in his mature work. Cityscapes, portraits and nudes combine representational passages with areas that approach abstraction.
