Armando

Born : 1929Died : 2018Documented citizenships : Netherlands

Armando, a Dutch artist born in Amsterdam in 1929 and who died in Potsdam in 2018, was the pseudonym of Herman Dirk van Dodeweerd. His career brings together the visual arts, poetry, theatre and music. His first solo exhibition takes place in 1954 at Galerie Le Canard in Amsterdam. That same year, his work Drawing enters the collection of the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin. The artist’s biography connects his preferred themes with his childhood in Amersfoort during the Second World War. He describes his own work as “soberly biographical”, a phrase that illuminates the asserted connection between personal experience and artistic creation.

As a poet and artist, he is involved with the journals De Nieuwe Stijl and Gard Sivik. He also plays the violin in the Tata Mirando Orchestra. From 1971 to 1997, he creates Herenleed with Cherry Duyns, a series of television and theatre programmes. In 1979–1980, he travels to Berlin and decides to stay there. He works in the former studio of the sculptor Arno Breker.

His writings receive several awards, including the Herman Gorter, F. Bordewijk and Multatuli prizes. In 1985, he is awarded the Jacobus van Looy Prize for his complete body of work; he also receives the Gouden Ganzeveer in 1987. A museum dedicated to Armando is established in Amersfoort in 1998, then destroyed by fire in October 2007. Part of the collection that was saved is transferred to Museum Oud Amelisweerd in Bunnik.

This profile brings together identity references for Armando and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
